Golden Week Flicks

Time pressures meant that the half-formed draft summary of April's cinema never saw the light of day. Rather than tackle a whole month, this time round I've set myself the more achievable task of picking out some of the films showing over Golden Week that I wish I had the opportunity to see. Most of the selections are playing at either Salon or Cinetwin Hondori and Cinetwin Shintenchi, but some are also showing at the multiplexes too.

So, without further ado here's the Golden Week selection.

Slumdog Millionaire

Danny Boyle's multi-award grabbing story of Mumbai slum dweller Jamal who is one question away from taking the top prize on India's version of "Who Want's To Be A Millionaire" , is playing at Cinetwin Shintenchi over Golden Week and through to the end of the month. Shows at 11:00, 13:30, 16:00 and 19:00. Late shows at 21:25 added for May 1-5. Also playing at Wald 11 and TOHO Midorii.

Burn After Reading

CIA "caper" by the consistent Coen Brothers starring Brad Pitt and George Clooney. 11:00, 13:00, 15:00, 17:00, 19:00 at Salon Cinema until May 8 (15:00, 17:00, 19:00 May 9-22). Also playing at Warner MyCal, TOHO Midorii, Wald 11 and 109 Cinemas.

Frost x Nixon

Dramatization of the David Frost's marathon interview session with Richard Nixon continues at Salon Cinema until May 15 (13:55, 19:10).

Defiance

Daniel Craig portrays one of the three Bielski brothers, former farmers who lead a group of Jewish partisans in the forests of Nazi-occupied Byelorussia (now Belarus) and saved the lives of over 1000 fellow Jews. Salon Cinema May 2-15 11:15, 16:20.

Also worthy of a mention is the Gus Van Sant directed Milk starring Sean Penn, showing this week at Wald 11 once a day at 18:20.

Finally, if you are in the mood for some Japanese movie sillyness, Oppai Volleyball is, unsurprisingly perhaps, playing everywhere. Apparently based on a true story Haruka Ayase stars as a young junior high school teacher who motivates the terrible boys volleyball club by promising to flash them her “oppai” (breasts) if they win the big tournament (Trailer). (Toei (11:45, 14:00, 16:15, 18:30 until May 22), Warner MyCal, Wald 11, TOHO Midorii, 109 Cinemas).
