Today the GetHiroshima family went down to Yokogawa for the annual Yokogawa Fushigi Festival. Despite it being the 14th year the event has been held,
it was our first visit. If know the Yokogawa area - which has a nice mix of Showa era shops, small eateries and arty galleries and stores - you
probably won't be surprised that the festival was pretty low key. That said, there were a lot of people wandering around the area enjoying various
performances including children's kagura, some maids singing about Hiroshima okonomiyaki and the inevitable yosakoi
dancing as well as poking around
the flea market stalls.
The real reason we were down there though was because of a helpful classified ad posted a few days earlier telling us about the "Wonder Carnival"
cosplay part of the festival. We didn't go down to the main venue, but we had a lot of fun watching people dressed up in the garb of their favorite
anime characters wandering around the pedestrianized Yokogawa shotengai and they were all more than willing to strike a pose for our photos.
Yokogawa is an area with a lot of character - very down to earth and comfortable with itself - and it was great to see crowds browsing in stores
that are normally very quiet and to see the mix of local old ladies (who seem to make up 90% of the residents) and the kids in their outrageous costumes.
Here are some of the pictures we took (Click on "Large" to view large size on nice black background). You can all our pics from the day here.
