The Minato Festival (“minato” means “port”)\, sponsored by the Hirayama Shrine\, is one of Onomichi's biggest events of the year and includes a parade and many other events. You can climb on some of them (08:30-09:00) and even try on a firefighter suit. Paper is provided\, but participants should bring their own paints\, felt-tips or crayons. You can get away with bringing little else but you can spot the seasoned artists with boards to lean on (a flattened cardboard box with some clips will do)\, and water bottle and pots for rinsing brushes. Other stuff advisable to bring would be a mat to sit on\, hats or parasols (there's barely any shade) and plenty to drink. Some people make a day of it and bring their picnics too. Entrees are only acceptable on the official paper (collect it free) but you can always paint for yourself too. By entering\, you are agreeing that winners' pictures will be published in the local press which retains full copyright of any pictures. In case of rain\, the event will be postponed until Sunday May 20. There is no parking at the park so you are asked to make alternative arrangements. Shigeo Fukuda Super-Retrospective DESCRIPTION: Shigeo Fukuda (1932-2009) was a sculptor\, graphic artist and poster designer who created optical illusions. His art pieces usually portray deception\, such as Lunch With a Helmet On\, a sculpture created entirely from forks\, knives\, and spoons\, that casts a detailed shadow of a motorcycle. His home outside Tokyo featured a 1.2 m front door that would appear far away from someone approaching the house. This door was a visual trick\, with the actual entrance to the house being an unornamented white door designed to blend in seamlessly with the walls of the house. The New York Times described how Fukuda's posters "distilled complex concepts into compelling images of logo-simplicity". In 1987\, Fukuda was inducted into the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame in New York City\, which described him as "Japan's consummate visual communicator". The Art Directors Club noted the "bitingly satirical commentary on the senselessness of war" shown in "Victory 1945" (above)\, which won him the grand prize at the 1975 Warsaw Poster Contest\, a competition whose proceeds went to the Peace Fund Movement. Dancing to the beat of music played on drums and bells\, young men wearing comical masks or a lion costume run through the city streets\, chasing the children there\, and hitting them on the head or body with bamboo whisks. The children thus “beaten” are then said to be safe from illness or disaster for the coming year. Even though they may be frightened\, toddlers are held by their parents and subjected to a “thrashing”\, all in good fun. Join the 300\,000 people who will be donning their yukata for the first time this year who take over Chuo-dori and environs to promenade\, play festival games like fish scooping\, buy strange inflatable novelties and stuff their faces with equally strange stuff on sticks. People line up at the Enryu-ji Temple (more commonly know as Tōkasan\, a mixed Buddhist and Shinto temple/shrine\, which is adorned with red lanterns (near the Peace Boulevard end of Chuō-dori) to pray for good luck by throwing a money offering into the shrine's coin box and clapping their hands. Tōkasan speciality yakuyoke uchiwa fans to ward off evil can be bought at the temple. As well as parades and summer bon dancing\, there will be taiko drumming and other performances on stages dotted around the center of town. See below for the schedule of main events. Yukata can cost a lot of money\, but reasonably priced ones can be had at stores like Uniqlo\, Mujirushi and in Sun Mall. Of course\, once you've got one you have to put the thing on. Luckily\, there are usually skilled hands provided by the  Hiroshima branch of the Osaka Kimono Dressing School available at several locations around the city to tidy up your attempts. Check back here for more details. Our favorite place is Shintenchi-koen where between 19:00 and 21:30 classic Japanese songs crackling out of the PA on the central tower and street stalls sell festival treats at fantastic prices. It feels much more like a local festival of days gone by than the madness just a few meters away on Chuo-dori. The local groups dancing welcome anyone to join in. Great fun and our recommendation if you are heading down to the festival with kids. Chuo-dori is usually closed to traffic on Friday and Saturday from 19:30. Crowded\, noisy\, high in kitsch and overtly commercial\, it does\, however\, pull in tens of thousands of people from near and far\, and many of them do seem to have a pretty good time. In addition to all the parades\, pop bands\, tarento celebrities\, comedians and hundreds of local hula clubs performing\, there are opportunities to watch some local kagura dance troupes. The craft beer and the local sake tents and the international food area\, also get pretty lively. But\, frankly\, there is so much going on\, and the program is almost indecipherable\, so your best bet is to dive in\, wander and see you what you come across. Or\, find yourself a shady spot and enjoy a drink and something on a stick watch the crowds go by. Usually\, the city streets are deserted once the stages have closed up\, but organizers are continuing to try and provide appropriate entertainment all day. In the evenings in the Peace Memorial Park area\, the Flower Candle Message event is being held nightly between 6 and 10pm with all the beautiful lights and candles on display. The highlight of the event is a reenactment of the departure of the local daimyo\, or lord\, and his entourage for of Edo\, a requirement of the sankin-kotai system imposed by the Tokugawa Shogunate. The parade of men and women dressed in colorful period costume usually cross the bridge at around 2pm. After cramming into the main temple building\, the lights go out at 10pm and two lucky shingi sticks are released from the ceiling. The 9000 or so men battle to get hold of one of them and try to stuff it into a wooden box. Whoever manages to do it is guaranteed a year of good fortune. In celebration of this\, once a year everyone goes to the local park and attempts to drink as much of it as possible. You can wander around the breweries and sample some of their products (the free stuff is generally lower quality though). Or join the masses in the Sake Hiroba in the park\, where for ¥1300 (¥1600 on the day) you get your own little cup from which to sample the 900 kinds of sake from all over the country on offer. If you get there in good time there is plenty of high quality stuff to be had\, and it's a great opportunity to experience the diversity (and potency) of sake. There is no re-admission to the main Sake Hiroba\, so if you want to do tour the breweries and stagger around the back streets\, you should probably do that first. As well as necking copious amounts of sake\, there are lots of parades and other fun and games going on through the day. This annual event takes place over a mostly flat  out and  back course starting and finishing at the Coca Cola West Hiroshima Stadium in Kannon. This year is the 32nd running of the event\, and they are expecting 12\,000 participants. Don't be put off by the word "marathon"\, the longest distance is 10km\, and there is a 5km\, as well as a 1km family run. Although it is fairly competitive at the front\, the emphasis is firmly on fun rather than racing and\, although it can get a bit crowded back in the pack\, the flat course makes it a goof one on which to try your first running event. Everyone does get a chance to win prizes in what is sometimes the longest lottery in history\, but with free flights\, hotel vouchers and invitations to a Hokkaido marathon it's worth hanging around. One GetHiroshima team member won a round trip flight to Tokyo a few years ago\, so it can happen. You can enter using one of the entry forms available at any branch of Hiroshima Bank\, Momiji Bank\, sports centers and <i>kouminkan</i> (pay using the bank transfer form and attach the receipt to the entry form) or online (pay by credit card or at a convenience store). There is also the added bonus of very reasonably priced childcare by trained staff for the duration of the concert\, meaning even couples with young children can enjoy the luxury of an evening out together without breaking the bank. As always\, there is no charge but a donation tray is passed around to  raise money for young widows who have to support a family and a workshop for the disabled. Since there are no tickets\, it is advisable to arrive early to get a good seat. Doors open at 5pm\, performance starts at 5:30pm. Due to the heavy demand for seating\, is is kindly requested that people do not leave their bags on seats and do not leave gaps between seats.
