Making Miyajima Shamoji Spoons and Miyajima's Famous Momiji-Manju Cakes
Today I went to Miyajima island with my young sister, her kids and her daughter's friend to
experience making Japanese rice spoons (ladels) that are famous from Miyajima island.
We also had a chance to bake momiji-manju cakes on that same day (maple shaped waffle cakes). They offer
these activities to groups of 10-40, but if you call and make a reservation for a smaller group, they
will try to fit you in with another group. They do the activities twice a day 13:00 and 15:00. They are
closed on Tuesdays and you must call ahead to make a reservation (Japanese only) (0829-44-1758).
The building is located a 1 minute's walk away from the bridge in front of the Port arrival gate.
It is called the Miyajima Dento Sangyo Kaikan and is located next to the Kinsui bekkan building.
So, I would like to tell you about our experience with the attached photos.
Making Rice Spoons
The rice spoons were aready cut when we got there, so we sanded away the rough edges
and then branded them with images of Miyajima's Torii gate, cherry blossoms and maple leaves.
It costs 315 yen per person and takes about an hour.
Making Momiji-manji Cakes
Around 25 people shared this experience together.
First we mixed together sugar, wheat flour, water, and the other ingredients in a big bowl
and then we poured the dough into a maple shaped mold and baked it.
The kids really enjoyed doing this activity. It costs 735 yen per person and takes about an hour.
People can experience doing these activities at the Miyajima Dento Sangyo Kaikan on the weekend.
Miyajima Dento Sangyo Kaikan is next to Kinsui bekkan in front of Miyajima port.
Making a reservation is necessary.
