Halloween Family Picnic Oct 28, 2007
While Natasha and Jamie have been taking care of the adult Halloween entertainment at Club Chinatown for the last 8 years (hats off to them!), GetHiroshima has
been supporting an annual non-profit Halloween family picnic.
It started off as a costumed fun run around
Hiroshima Castle back in 2003 and has since shifted to a park in between Ushita and Hakushima next
to the Kyobashi River has gradually grown in size. This year we had about a hundred people!
We were also blessed with great weather and a friendly, enthusiastic crowd of kids and their families.
Special thanks to the moms and dads that contributed candy, great spooky dishes to the potluck and donated money
to help with the event. We also appreciate the many parents who stepped up to help with the games and
activities!
(Jackie):
Huge thank yous to everyone who helped. We set up but you all make the party! You also donated ¥16,600 which very nearly covered our entire costs!
This really helps us to ensure the event happens next year too. Apologies if your child was one of the few who wasn't quick enough to catch a doughnut or an apple.
(I think mine cried the loudest - was there a prize for that??) We were caught unawares by the huge increase in numbers from last year, but we will do our best to make sure
there are more next year, so please come back and try again! We are already working on ways to improve for next time!
Given the growing numbers, we would welcome anyone out there who would like to help us to host one of the scheduled events next year. We need people to be responsible for
their "own" events, as well as helpers for existing ones. If you feel up to the challenge, PLEASE get in touch with any of the organizers sometime before September next year!
The event was run this year by: Ewen (Gamemaster), Michele (Coloring Section), Lorna (Apple Dunker-in Chief) , Joy (Potluck & Pinata) and Jackie (Scary Donut Clown)
(Joy) Special thanks to everyone who helped clear up (and even took a bag of gomi
back home with them) and thanks to the Foreign Buyer's Club
who donated a goodie-filled hamper for the pumpkin carving contest, and to
Flying Pig for their generous donation of the huge, fabulous Halloween cake and pumpkin pie. We had planned to give prizes to the most halloween-y dishes this year at the
potluck, but they disappeared too quickly to judge, we will have a polaroid camera on hand for next year to capture your creations so we can all vote on our favorites to win.
I missed so many chances to take photos, so if you'd like your Halloween pictures to be included
in the slide show below, upload them to Flickr and tag them
with "ghhalloweenkids07". Add a separate "gethiroshima" tag to
have them appear in the little widgets we have on the
blog and main site. If your photo gets marked as the most favorite by the end of the year (12/31/2007),
we will send you a little prize in the mail. It is free to join Flickr and free to vote for your favorites.
Looking forward to seeing you again next year!
As always, if you'd rather your photo didn't appear or would like to get in touch, please let us know by sending us a message by clicking the "Feedback" link at
the bottom of any GH page. If it's one of our pictures we will remove the tag or picture as you wish, if it's a picture taken by
someone else we will try and pass on your request.
