Ohtake Shinro: New Universe, on the Road

For lovers of contemporary art, or, even better, those who are yet to make its acquaintance, there is an exemplary exhibition currently on show at HCMCA, Hiroshima City's very own Museum of Contemporary Art. Wherever he goes, Ohtake Shinro gathers garbage, junk and assorted printed matter, returns home and rearranges it into assemblages with the semblance of works of art. Ohtake does this with such impressive energy and talent that he has become one of Japan's most famous contemporary artists.

The current exhibition, entitled "New Universe on the Road," resolutely confines itself to the mundane, the gallery chock-full of works, 600 or more, overflowing like the wheely-bins of the Dorchester Hotel, a giant music-box filling even the gallery-goers' ears with faux-Sonic Youth feedback squall, Ohtake in danger of giving Baudrillard a premature exhumation.

It is what it is. Go and see it before it is all carted off to Tokyo. The exhibition runs until November 25th 2007.
