This Sunday night was followed by a holiday and the drum and bass faithful (the crowd did seem made up of mostly the usual
suspects) were out in force and partying hard. A nifty optical illusion using nothing more than a large length of
black fabric effectively changed Chinatown from down at heel ex-cabaret bar to underground club, a better
than usual job of getting the sound levels, and a judicious use of visuals and lasers right gave this event a proper
club feel.
The Bass Instinct crew warmed things up nicely for the man Hype and his MC Daddy Earl. There were no fireworks but
Hype's set complete with some trademark scratch action gave the up for it crowd plenty to bounce to. MC Daddy Earl did
just what an MC should - Hiroshima MCs take note - no shouting, letting the music take front and center, just doing enough on the
mic to keep things flowing.
As Windcheater comments on his blog
it was nice to see them hang around on the dancefloor for a while after his set while Sleepyeye really ripped the place up
with a very smooth, very varied high energy set - nice one!
All in all it was an excellent night out. The local drum and bass scene has really come on in the last couple of years, though
one wonders if it's hit its peak. If they want to take it to the next level promoters now have to work out how to
appeal beyond their established clientele - but if they continue to party like they did on Sunday, who needs the next level!
