Ganesh Indian Restaurant Takanobashi

There are a few Indian restaurants to choose from in Hiroshima these days and with its friendly staff, delicious food and reasonable prices, Ganesh has developed a loyal clientele.

This small restaurant chain started in Tokuyama in Yamaguchi Prefecture back in 2001. This branch in Takanobashi opened in February 2005, a year after their restaurant in the Ujina ferry terminal. It is easy to get to by streetcar (Takanobashi stop). Once you reach Takanobashi, head into the covered mall and you will find it on the first floor on the right side (heading toward the river).

The curries we tried were all deliciously creamy. The owner tells that they cut back on the buttermilk and supplement with ground cashews. It seems to work well, and you can really pig out without feeling you have to be rolled down the street when you leave. Indeed, it's hard not to eat heartily when you order one of their thali or set meals. The vegetarian thali comes with a choice of 3 curries, salad, nan, samosa and more for ¥1800. The deluxe set for 2 people includes 2 tandoori dishes, 2 curries, 2 nans, salads, samosas, drinks and dessert for ¥3900.

There is a "party menu" bargain for groups of 4 or more at ¥1900/pp (add ¥1300 for all-you-can-drink) including a variety of tandoori, curries, nans, salads, chicken dishes and more.

Menu sections include:

  • Tandoori: chicken, shish kebab, mixed meat, seafood and fish.
  • Curries: chicken, mutton, pork, seafood and vegetable (4 types).
  • Starters: salads, papad, raita, samosa and pakodas.
  • Rice and Nan: briyani, pulau and plain rice and 10 types of nan.

From the ala carte menu, the garlic nan is sublime with lots of chopped garlic with turmeric. The vegetarian curry with eggplant and tomato was also delicious and fellow diners won't be able to get a spoon in. The prawns tandoori were also good and full of spice. Our 3 year old was more than happy with his ¥800 Kids Set, which came on a cute koala plate, and both the wait and kitchen staff were very friendly to him.

"Discriminatory" 2.0

A detailed account of strange discriminatory treatment by the management toward foreign university students can be found here: http://www.darlosworld.co.uk/2009/03/30/heading-to-hiroshima-and-the-western-way-of-honshuu-and-the-discriminating-indian-restaurant/ http://www.japanprobe.com/?p=9563

"It has all been good for us" 5.0
GHEditor - Thu Jul 2008
We have eaten here on many occasions and never felt sick the next day. I often see the same Indian chefs there each time, so I am not sure about the claim of one-day chefs and a high turnover. There seem to be some strongly negative reviews about the various Indian places maybe due to the competitive nature of this popular business. It would nice to see more constructive criticism than negative reviews that look like they are trying to ruin someone's business.

"The Best" 5.0
Hal - Tue Oct 2006
I've been to all the Indian restaurants listed in GetHiroshima and have eaten the curry, nan and BBQ at each place. Ganesh is the best in regards to the portions, atmosphere, service, taste and price.
