Warung Matahari

Fantastic Indonesian food, cooked by Balinese chef Rasa, at reasonable prices is what you can expect at Warung Matahari.

The menu changes with the seasons, but the selection of Indonesian dihes cooked using locally available ingredients is always good. Warung Matahari is also vegetarian and vegan friendly, if you explain to the waiter when ordering, meat and or seafood can be kept out of many of the dishes on the menu without difficulty.

The restaurant is tastefully decorated in Balinese style and the wait staff are dressed in beautiful saris. The recently added large screen TV which displays Indonesian pop music videos and traditional dance can, however, be distracting.

"can't believe I haven't been in so long" 5.0

Haven't been in ages and wondered why whilst I ate. Great food. Felt I had to review it again to point out that they now have a very good Enlgish menu with pictures too. As I said before; Go.

"a great hidden find" 5.0

WM is well worth it. Despite having no English menus, the wait staff is very helpful, even if your Japanese is limited. I asked for a recommendation and was asked if I could eat meat. Though I'm not a vegetarian I appreciated that awareness on her part. She recommended the green papaya salad and a chicken dish. My friend ordered a regular salad and a beef curry with a side of rice and a beer. My salad came and it was amazing! Crunchy fried potato sticks so thin I didn't trust that that's what they were, and so tasty. The salad was just shredded green papaya, purple onion, some cherry tomato halves, and 4 or 5 boiled shrimp, perhaps some garlic, and the dressing was like something my Thai friends used to prepare: maybe just fresh-squeezed lime juice and a little rice vinegar? Anyway, whatever it was, it was all delicious. And my friend's salad was no chopped lettuce on a plate. Instead, stalks of lettuce drizzled with dressing stood in a small bowl. The bowl sat on a plate accented with squid, salmon, and shrimp. My salad was so filling I wondered if I had room for the main entree, and forgot that the chicken leg and thigh are considered the best pieces of the bird by some. But they were so well-seasoned with the peanutty-curry sauce that I found myself eating right down to the bone. My friend's beef curry was in another delicious mix of peanutty coconut milk curry I could smell across the table and just had to try. Throughout the meal, I kept saying, "We've got to come back here and try the set meal" because I wanted a little of everything again. The set meal on the menu said "for two" and that's a requirement, not a recommendation. It might be a good option next time. We finished the meal with ice cream for dessert: mango for my friend, and I ordered the black rice and vanilla. Warm, sweet black sticky rice hidden under a scoop of vanilla ice cream and topped with mango. You can't beat that. Our total bill was under 5000Y but worth it, in my opinion. I'm in total agreement with the last reviewer. I liked the place a lot: they were helpful, gave good recommendations, the food was great, and I loved the Indonesian pop music. I will definitely go back.

"Don't listen to anyone else - it's a 5" 5.0

Can't believe this place is languishing on a 4. Fantastic food. Just been bored silly by my parents visiting telling me how everything is so nice...this place came top though. Really really good, and sod the lot of you, I like the video screen. Go.

"Pretty good" 4.0

I really like the atmosphere here. Dark and 'natural' looking except for the large TV playing a channel I assume that is out of Bali. Food is good and reasonably priced though the portions are a bit small. Presentation is quite nice though. Watch not to put too much of the 'hot sauce' on your food unless you like the sensation of melting tongue. The menu is in Japanese except for the names of the dishes.

"Cosy and delicious" 4.0

Lovely food and a nice variety. When we ordered the set menu we were disappointed to find we both had to choose the same dishes from the selection so had to compromise a little. Everything tasted beautiful though and was presented well. Would like to go again and taste the other half of the set menu!

"The Best Papaya Salad!" 5.0
Flo - Fri Nov 2004
Overall, the menu is good, but it's the papaya salad that really makes this place. And it's really near Salon Cinema -- so here's my date suggestion: go see a movie at Salon Cinema, then some food at Warung Matahari, and then drinks at Slim Chance (back in the same building as Salon Cinema). There's only the one chef preparing food, though, so while the food is worth it, the speed of delivery isn't fast.
