Central Park Chuo Koen
Chuo Koen, one of the biggest parks in the city center located near the Ota-gawa river, is a popular and fun place to view the cherry blossoms in Spring. There are plenty of cherry trees surrounding the large grassy area, but the wide stretch of grassy riverbank that lies just outside the park, with its cherry treelined pedestrian walkway is one of my favorite city hangouts.
To encourage residents to maintain a greener Hiroshima, "Green Fair" is held each spring and fall in the park.
At the festival, companies and schools produce exhibition gardens, seeds and flowers are given away and other events are held at the park.
The park grounds include Hiroshima Castle and museum, Hiroshima Museum of Art, Hiroshima City Cinematographic and Audiovisual Library, Hiroshima City Children's Museum of Culture and Science, Hiroshima Central City Library, Hiroshima Municipal Baseball Stadium, Hiroshima Prefectural Sports Center (Green Arena), Hiroshima City Central tennis courts, Family Pool, Yuka-en Chinese Garden, Hannover Garden and the Green Arena Event Hall.
During the holidays and on the weekends, you can also find groups playing frisbee, ultimate frisbee, soccer and other sports on the large grassy field in the middle.
