Søholm Cafe + Dining

Located only 10 minutes outside the city center in Ujina, Sø holm cafe + dining offers a chance to escape into spacious comfort, enjoy good food, drinks and desserts with the added bonus of a harbor view.

The dining area is very spacious, the ceilings are high, there is a dark wooden floor, the furniture is modern and sophisticated, but very comfortable- there is a fantastic atmosphere here day or night.

For lunch, a few simple sets of pasta, sandwich or stew (+salad&drink) are all available for under ¥1500. The pasta dishes are delicious and served in large bowls (which you can buy in the Actus interior store to which is connected). There are a few options for vegetarians at lunchtime, but nothing on the dinner menu unless you eat fish or seafood. The staff are willing to make substitutions or changes to dishes if you ask nicely.

On the dinner menu-
Starters: tapas ¥240-420 per plate as well as salads.
Main dishes (¥525-2100): quiche, bouillabase, vegetable+seafood or sausage pot-au-feu (French style hot pot) or stew.
Grill: meats & seafood (¥525-1050)
Pasta: fish, seafood and meat sauces (¥945-1470).

They have a good selection of wines, cocktails and spirits at the bar. This would also be a great place to stop in for a drink sometime.

Since this restaurant is under the La Chambre management, all the desserts come from the fabulous La Chambre Sweets. We treated ourselves to the "Noir" mousse cake with cherries which was outstanding.

Definitely recommended for a sunny day when you can incorporate a walk or chance to sit outside as a part of your experience. I had never been to this part of Ujina before, it is easy to get to by car- head straight through danbara, cross route 2, pass Hiroshima Joshidai, Ujina Jusco (2005), Mazda and the Keirin stadium - keep heading straight toward the sea and you will find the white tower at the end of that road. Follow the signs for "Actus" shop and you will find Soholm Cafe + Dining inside. It is a 5 minute walk from the Ujina Kaigain tram stop.

  • Nearest Streetcar stop: Ujina Kaigain Dori
  • Reservations for dinner only
  • Non-smoking at lunch, no non-smoking area after 2pm
  • Parking available (26 free spaces in front of Actus and 50+ spaces across the street in lot)
  • Desserts from La Chambre Sweets
  • Credit Cards accepted
  • Seating for 30-40 people
  • English speaking staff, English and Japanese menu with pictures
  • Søholm Cafe + Dining also in Shinjuku, Fukuoka, Nagoya and Kyoto.

"Great place to relax." 4.0
Anonymity Personified.Fri Feb 2009
I went there on a mini coffee date and really enjoyed the atmosphere. We sat on one of the sofas that face the large windows that have a view of the harbour and found that the time just slipped by as the sofa was comfortable and the atmosphere was very relaxing. The cafe au lait was very authentic- rich and in the traditional french bowl. The coffee is expensive but comes with lush snacks. All in all, I really felt that the atmosphere and quality of the coffee warranted the price.

"Expensive, bland, but great view" 3.0
BMW Driver - Sat Sep 2006
The kind of place where people who drive silver Mercedes or white BMW's go on the weekend to buy overpriced European (made in Japan) furniture. In no particular order: as with most western-style Japanese restaurants the food is bland and forgettable, the atmosphere is OK, the view is great, the portions are small. Don't look over the side of the rail at the harbor edge before your meal, cos this is where all the flotsam washes up. Need a car to get there, and not worth a cycle.
