DJ Marky and Stamina MC at VOLT 04.11.05
|
DJ Marky, one of drum and bass's top stars, returned to Hiroshima for his second visit last week. Brazil's finest
was once more accompanied by Stamina MC, the man who supplied the vocals on their massive hit LK which
also featured the delightful guitar
and vocals of Brazilian music legend Jorge Ben. Last time, they touched down in Hiroshima on a Sunday night and the
place was rammed so I was expecting a big one on this Friday night. Arriving just after midhight however,
Chinatown was looking cavernous. What is it with Hiroshima and Friday nights? One person speculated that the
clubbing crowd is made up of the thousands of hairdressers in the city who are mostly off on Mondays - making
Sunday a big night.
The Bass Instinct Cru did a good job of warming up a chilly room with a mix of dnb classics, liquid beats and some
of their more characteristic hardcore sounds, and by the time Marky and Stamina arrived the dancefloor was full and
the atmosphere starting to build. For a man used to playing some of the world's biggest clubs and the
occassional stadium, Marky didn't seem to mind the small crowd and he hit the decks with gusto. Last time he played
a pretty full on breakneck set of party dnb, but this visit was far more varied and featured more soulful latin
flavored tracks, with an ample sprinkling of big bangers and obligatory display of his scratching prowess.
The set was a little disjointed, and at one point Marky headed off on a 30 min vocal dnb excursion that Stamina MC
was obviously not feeling. The crowd stayed with it however, feeding off Marky's energy. Bouncing around behind the
decks like a crazy thing, he is certainly one of dnb's top showmen. They of course closed out the three hour set
with LK, which even though we've heard a thousand times it's hard to imagine getting tired of.

So it wasn't packed, but there were enough people to provide the atmosphere and room to dance. This felt like a
real dnb night. A great DJ and great MC shared with other people who love the sound.
Can't ask for much more than that.
More Brazilian drum and bass at Chinatown Friday, December 9 with DJ Patife at Bass Instinct.
