Hiroshima Flower Festival
This year is the 34rd anniversary of the annual Flower Festival and the theme is Kitto saku! Tsunaida te to te ni Heiwa no hana ga which I'll have a go at translating as "From hands joined in friendship the flower of peace cannot fail to bloom" (nihongo geniuses feel free to chip in).
The Flower Festival is Hiroshima's biggest event, drawing in many more people than even the August 6 A-bomb commemorations, which grew out of the celebrations following the Hiroshima Carp's first championship in 1975. Personally, it has always been an event that lacks soul with commercialism overriding"festival" spirit.
It does, however, pull in tens of thousands of people from near and far, and many of them do see to have a pretty good time. So, if you are in town in Golden Week, it is worth going for a wander around and take in all the activity, or just sit in a shady spot and enjoy a drink while the crowds go by.
In addition to the pop bands, tarento celebrities, comedians and hundreds of local hula clubs performing, there are opportunities to watch some local kagura dance troupes on the first two days.
Usually, the city streets are deserted once the stages have closed up, but organizers are continuing to try and provide appropriate entertainment all day. In the evenings in the Peace Memorial Park area, the Flower Candle Message event is being held nightly between 6 and 10pm with all the beautiful lights and candles on display.
The program each year is huge and virtually indecipherable, but we will endeavor to post some of the "highlights" nearer to the event:
