Nuclear Themes In Film

The Hiroshima Peace Film Festival features a talk with three speakers on nuclear themes in film.

The first speaker is Dr. Robert Jacobs of the Hiroshima Peace Institute. Jacobs will speak about the production of atomic films by the US government in the 1950s, focusing on Civil Defense films made for the general public, on top secret films made to train soldiers about participation in nuclear tests, and on the photographing of nuclear tests.

Dr. Mick Broderick of Murdoch University in Perth (whose Atomicalia exhibition is currently being held in Hiroshima), Australia will then talk about the role of nuclear weapons in feature films. Broderick will examine the changing role of nuclear weapons in the post-Cold War world and how they become helpful, savior weapons that can save humankind from aliens and asteroids.

Takashi Uemura will then discuss the genre of zombie films and discuss how these films depict a post-nuclear world and survivors of war. He will explore how zombie films show the individual as loosing their individual humanity and becoming desensitized to the destruction of society.

The lectures will be both in English and Japanese. The even will take place in the auditorium downstairs from the Peace Memorial Museum and will run from 2-6 pm. It is open to the public.
