Junken Film Festival
The first annual Junken Film Festival/Hiroshima (JFFH) presents the premiere of Flick The Bunny by local filmmakers, Craig Noels, Simon Wykamp, and Ben Soar. JFFH will also highlight some films that were highly acclaimed at other festivals, such as the Cinemadamare Film Festival (Italy), VII Semana de Cine Iberoamericano de Villaverde (Spain), Heart of Gold (Australia) and the Kawasaki Digital Short Film Fest (Japan).
JFFH has assembled a diverse program featuring documentaries, feature length films, shorts and animations along with a selection of interpretive films made by emerging filmmakers. The weekend long festival aims to extend across and transcend national, linguistic and cultural boundaries through film and will showcase independent films from over 12 countries; including France, England, United States, Finland, Brazil, Georgia, and Israel. All foreign language films have English subtitles
JFFH is partnering with Film Aid International which uses film to entertain and educate displaced people in refugees camps; helping to alleviate problems of psychosocial trauma, illness and despair.
Festival director Lisa Quattlebaum, an American expat, artist and art teacher (she also penned the GetHiroshima column, City Rice Tales) is keen to point out, however, “We don’t take ourselves too seriously. There is playfulness at the heart of the festival - a spirited curiosity about the world that is clever and daring. “
Winning films will be selected by audiences and posted online after the festival. The categories are Scissors (most cutting edge cinematography), Paper (best screenplay - outstanding dialogue and/or story), and Stone (groundbreaking in how we experience film, culture and ourselves). During the festival, a Junken movie trivia quiz will also be available online and at all screenings – winners will receive a prize.
The films are screened at Hiroshima City Citizen's Plaza (next to Fukuromachi Elementary School just south of Andersen and Neverland toy store) in downtown Hiroshima.
Festival launches and after-parties are open to the public each night, along with pre-screening cocktail lounges.
