Full Moon Festival
Iri-hama Beach on the backside of Miyajima is once again taken over for a weekend of mellow music and moon worship.
Over the past few years the festival has grown quite large, with bigger stages and sound systems. This year, however, organizers say they are returning to the original flavor of festival; slightly smaller scale with the emphasis on trying to create a peaceful and unique community for the few days of the event.
If it's a mad Thailand style full moon party you'll likely be disappointed, but if you'd like to escape the city and spend some time camping out on a relatively nice beach (depending on the weather prior to the event), listening (and joining in if you bring your instruments with you) to mellow music, surrounded by chill people then this is the just the ticket.
You are expected to be bring along your own cup, eating bowl and utensils. Garbage will be separated into eight categories to be recycled, but you are expected to carry out any large or "dangerous" trash (which includes batteries and gas cannisters).

Access
Due to limited parking at Iri-hama partcipants are now required to park at Tsutsumigaura Beach Park and ride the rest of the way, over the very narrow and winding mountain road, on the back of the shuttle trucks (an adventure in itself!). This means it's a good idea to pack light.
There is no running water available at the festival site. There will be food and drink stalls, but it is advisable to take your own supply. There is a public bath house at Tsusumigaura Beach Park.
