"Animals werent taken care of"
micinus - Mon Nov 2008
I went to the Asa zoo for my daughter's school field trip. We saw a monkey with open scar on the leg, elephants looked so thin ( just like a previous describer's line), etc...
My 7yrs old daughter even noticed that animals there looked unhappy. We felt sad and awful when we left there. I don't think we will go back there again.
"Extra Savings with the Passport!"
Yumi.T - Wed May 2008
The year passport is a real bargain! If you get this passport, you can go to these three places (*) again and again. * The Asa Zoo, The Hiroshima Botanical Garden and the Hiroshima City Forest Park. The year passport costs 1,500 yen (adults 18 and older). For children (Elementary through high school or those younger than 18) it is 500 yen. I want to visit here again.
"cramped conditions for many animals"
Anonymity Personified.Sat May 2006
There are educational programs, although not in English without arranging a special tour. Nice layout but cages and living space for many larger animals, especially big cats, are much too small; don't reflect new thinking in how to house animals in zoos.
"Good For Japan"
AnimalLover - Mon Apr 2006
I went to the zoo and found it to be nice. When I say "Good For Japan" This is because other places in Japan are very small- Cages, living conditions and animals usually look underfed. I didn't see that at this zoo. It has been a year since I've been there. I am going back this week and will give you an update.
"A nice zoo as far as zoos go"
jj - Sun Apr 2006
Asa Zoo has a fair amount of space compared to many other zoos I have been to (including the famous San Diego and Honolulu zoos and a few dismal zoos in Tokyo) of course I hope they make bigger pens for the larger animals- wouldn't it be great to see a tiger have room to run instead of pace in a small cell? But it isn't a bad zoo really. I especially like the front grassy area for the giraffes and zebras (why they get the most room I am not sure) and my son loves the petting zoo section with the animals everywhere, the donkey rides and the things to climb on. I have to admit that it is interesting to see the animals and my son is completely fascinated by it. We recently went for the night safari (spring and summer event) and it was a lot of fun, the animals seemed very relaxed and it was a lot cooler than it is there during the day, I would highly recommend it. Our favorite was the lesser pandas and the snakes.
"crowded and inhumane conditions"
animal lover - Mon Mar 2006
An elephant which looked like it was starving. (We could see its ribs and its legs were extremely thin.)
A rhinoceros whose horn was bleeding.
A lioness kept in a tiny dark room not bigger than four times her size. One member of our group said that that lioness is always locked up in the same small, dark room every time she visits the zoo!!!
Tigers and monkeys or baboons in cages so small they could just turn around.
Cages and enclosures for many of the animals are extremely small, giving the animals almost no room to move around
