February at the movies

Here is a round up of the English language movies opening in Hiroshima during February. I'm hoping that this will be a regular feature and will in some way make up for the disappearance of our detailed cinema listings. Click on linked cinema names to go to the times listed on their websites.

We'd love to hear if you find this a useful service worth continuing. If you think it's something you would like to help out with or improve upon, we would LOVE to hear from you. Head over to blog and pop your comments here.

The film with most nominations for this year's Oscars, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett starts on February 7 (trailer below). Read reviews at Rotten Tomatoes. Showing at Wald 11, Warner Mycal, TOHO Midorii, T-Joy Higashi-hiroshima.

For kids who's tastes are more saccharine High School Musical: The Movie opens the same day at Wald 11, TOHO Midorii, Cine Twin 1.

In complete contrast to the above is Brian De Palma's "fictional documentary" Redacted at Salon Cinema February 7-13 which follows a troop of US soldiers in Iraq. From a read of Peter Bradshaw's review in The Guardian, this is certainly not a popcorn flick, and may be a bit much for the 10:30am screen time. Wait till the following week's 20:55 showtime.

Also at Salon, February 7-13 at 21:25, is the thriller Eastern Promises (trailer below). Directed by David Cronenberg and starring Viggo Mortensen and Naomi Watts, it has received great reviews and is probably the film I'd pick to see this month.

The slow, but very nice Lars and The Real Girl with Ryan Gosling is also here (February 7-13 at 14:40, 17:35, 19:40) and there another chance to see No Country For Old Men for ¥1000 (February 7-13 at 15:15).

Music buffs might want to check out Amazing Journey: The Story of The Who (trailer below) at Yokogawa Cinema (Feb 7-13 at 19:00).

Thirty years after the slashing began Friday 13: The Prequel opens on Friday, February 13 at Wald 11.

The Clint Eastwood directed drama Changeling (trailer below) starring Angelina Jolie and John Malkovich opens Friday, February 20. Read reviews at Rotten Tomatoes. Cine Twin 2, Wald 11, Warner Mycal, TOHO Midorii, Al Park.

The following day, February 21, see the start of the less well received Seven Pounds starring Will Smith. Wald 11, Warner Mycal, Sucaraza, TOHO Midorii, T-Joy Higashi-hiroshima.

Hardly surprising to see Jason Stratham starring in The Bank Job (trailer below), but it has a decent rating on Rotten Tomatoes so it might be worth a trip down to Salon Cinema February 21-27 at 10:30, 14:45 and 19:10. Great soundtrack.
