Let's face it, as fantastic an event as Fuji Rock Festival is, it's ****ing far away and ***ing
expensive. If you're working you probably can't get away for long enough and if you're not you
probably can't afford it. If you can get away and can afford it BUY YOUR TICKET LOSER!
If not, there are a couple more options. Not
prepared to fork out for a trip to Osaka?
Then click
HERE for details of Hiroshima's own attempt at an outdoor music festival, SOUND MARINA.
Otherwise you might be interested in the Summer Sonic Festival that looks like it will give FRF '00 a
run for its money. It's not quite got the line up of FRF, the charm of a beautiful location nor the
atmosphere of a multi-day festival with everyone camping on site, but it does have a decent and
eclectic line up and is a damn sight easier to get to.
Held on the weekend after FRF '00 (Aug 5 and 6) the festival is being held simultaneously at Fujikyu
Highland Conifer Forest (venue for that ill fated first Fuji Rock Festival) outside of Tokyo and at
the World Trade Center at Cosmos Square in Osaka. The same bands are playing at both places switching
days.
While Osaka's Saturday line up is perhaps a bit weak, Sunday looks like a great way to spend a summer's
day. In Osaka, the main stage hosts Green Day, Ben Folds Five, Weezer, Mansun among others on Saturday.
On Sunday the Mad Capsule Markets, Dragonash, Arrested Development and the godfather of soul himself James
Brown warm up for headliners, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. With a program like that it's gonna
be HOT! HOT! HOT!
If the heavens decide to open, not to worry, the 2nd stage is indoor (Osaka Inex Hall) and hosts
Teenage Fanclub, The Bluetones, Ween, and Sunny Day Service (Saturday) and Supercar, The Flaming Lips,
Eels and Grandaddy (Sunday).
