Hiroshima Garage Bakuon Film Festival

HIROSHIMA GARAGE BAKUON FILM FESTIVALB-movie cinephiles may like to kick off their Golden Week with three days of international cinema featuring blood, zombies, rock’n'roll and Jean Luc Godard, over what Yokogawa Cinema promises to be a very loud bakuon sound system.

The Aritist

One movie you shouldn’t have to worry too much about whether it is dubbed or what language the subtitles are in, is the silent Oscar success The Artist (although the IMDb entry does say that there are a few English intertitles, which my be in Japanese). It is currently showing at Salon Cinema in Takanobashi.

Frederick Wiseman Retrospective

Hiroshima has an excellent Cinematographic Library which shows classic cinema throughout the year at very reasonable prices. It may be churlish to complain, but most of the films are either in Japanese without English subtitles, or “foreign” language films with Japanese subtitles.

Between February 22 and March 10, however, the library is screening a series of 15 classic documentary films directed by Frederick Wiseman. All but one of them are in English.
